"So, Shadow, are you coming too? I think we should leave now..." She looked out of the window. It was getting dark outside. "Yes, we have to go now. Well, Shadow, now is the time to decide if you want to join us?..."

"Sure, I'm in," said Shadow. "But do you mind going through my stronghold before? I have to crab some things..." He stood up, ready for departure.

They exited the pub. It was late afternoon, and the golden sun made the canton's walls look like gold. They walked down the road surrounding the canton, approached the gondolier and payed the man to take them to Foreign Quarter.
While they sat in the boat and the Dark Elf maneuvered with the boat betweem the other cantons, Shadow looked over the board. Sun reflected in the almost still water only disturbed by the wawes made by their boat. "Times like this make me melancholic," he wisphered, and sat back on the bench, relaxing...
They got off the boat at Foreign Quarter. "So," said Shadow. "We head for Balmora first. Shall we take the Silt or teleport? Or go by boat to Hla Oad and from there to my stronghold straight away?"

"You forgot that we could just walk. The wilds are quite interesting during the night."

"Let's walk then, fine," said Shadow, "Although I left my bow at home... But I'm sure the fresh night air will do good for all of us."
They set out towards Balmora. The night was starry, but the moons were hid behind the clouds that partially covered the sky, so it was quite dark. Once they reached out of the range of the lights of Vivec, Shadow took a lantern from his travel-bag and lit it.
They had walked about two hours when they saw a light from the west. Shadow stopped. "There is now town that way," he said. "Maybe we should go and check it out. It may be a forest fire..."

"Yes," said Cara. "Lets go and check it out. And who knows, maybe we'll find some xp there, too." And they moved along.

"I will hide for everyones protection." Jaraxle pulled forth a longbow and jumped up into the trees.

Shadow moved carefully forward, holding his hand near the shortsword. Then suddenly he gasped. There was a man standing on a small clearing. He wore a wizardly robe and his face was covered by a strange helm that looked like some mythological monster's scull, and in his hands was a beautifully carved Ebony Staff. But that was not what made Shadow gasp. Right next to the man stood two Flame Atronachs, not at all hostile, and they seemed to be chatting with the stranger.
The man noticed Shadow, and at once took a hostile position. He mumbled a strange word, and the Atronachs stepped forward. Shadow jumped away and barely managed to escape from a Fire Storm spell. "Ambush!" he yelled. "Get back!"

Two glowing arrows flew out of a nearby tree, one killing an atronarch, the other digging itself into the wizards arm. Jaraxle jumped down out of the tree, blade drawn and advancing on the left Flame Atronarch.

Shadow charged the mage with his shortsword. His opponent sent a hurling fireball towards him and it hit Shadow on his left shoulder. He fell, but managed to throw his sword towards the mage. It nailed the mage to the nearby tree. "Get him, Jaraxle!" yelled Shadow...

Jaraxle came up at the mage, his sword flashing. When he reached the mage though, he only held his blade to the mage's throat. "How dare you attack us without warrant?! I should kill you! But, I am curious as to know your name before I run you through."

"I am the Raven's Apprentice," said the Mage furiously. "You shall get no information out of me. I am simply to kill you." And with a quick move he pushed Jaraxle's blade away from his throat and hit him with his staff so that he fell. He was going to give Jaraxle a terrbile blow that could have indeed been fatal, but Shadow's well-timed throwing knife hit the mage's hand and he swore and dropped the staff.
"He's all yours, Jaraxle," said Shadow, trying to get up from the ground and reach his shortsword that had been dropped when the mage made his move...

With a flick of his wrist, Jaraxle sent five well aimed daggers ino the mage's back. Kneeling down next to the mage, Jaraxle threw a cloth at him. "Wipe yourself off. You're dead."

"You defeated me," mumbled the dying man, "but our numbers are many... and... the Master's wrath shall be... overwhelming... You cannot defeat... the Master." He sighed and then remained silent. The Flame Atronach that had still survived disappeared in a burst of bright light. "A summon, it was," said Shadow.
He came up to the mage, holding his left hand that had been badly burnt. He searched his body but found nothing except a strange ring - it was an usual round silver ring, but inside it there was a small carving of some kind of a snake.
"Who is the Master he spoke of, I wonder," Shadow said to himself. "Dying men rarely lie..."
